What Is Webster Technique For Prenatal Chiropractic Care?

More and more women are becoming aware of the benefits of pregnancy chiropractic care, but many wonder if it is safe. What is The Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a chiropractic adjustment method designed specifically for pregnancy. It was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), and has been the gold standard for prenatal chiropractic care for over 20 years.

Dr. Webster developed the technique in response to the pregnancy of his daughter. After a long and arduous labor, he speculated that pelvic adjustments during pregnancy could have made an impact and reduced her difficulty. He then went on a mission to develop a method “for laboring women to help with the ease of birth.”

His first patient to apply his new method had a pregnancy that was presenting breech – where the baby’s bottom is facing down. If not corrected, breech can cause difficult labor and even birth injuries. After treating his patient once per week for several weeks, the family was pleased to discover the baby had turned vertex in time for delivery.

To test this success further, Dr. Webster began teaching his technique to other chiropractors with patients presenting breech. These doctors also reported corrections with babies turning vertex, thus coining the title “The Webster Breech Turning Technique” – later shortened to “The Webster Technique” as it began to show additional benefits aside from breech turning.

In 2000, the ICPA implemented The Webster Technique Certification, which teaches chiropractors proper technique, its importance, and application throughout pregnancy.

Benefits of The Website Technique

Over the years, The Webster Technique has proven to have various benefits for both baby and mother.

Maternal benefits include:

  • Reduced back pain
  • Reduced sciatica
  • Improved pelvic and sacral alignment
  • Improved sleep and comfort
  • Stress reduction
  • Improved digestion
  • Easier labor

Fetal benefits:

A common problem we see during pregnancy is subluxations, or misalignments, in the pelvic region. These subluxations can restrict a baby’s movement in the womb, interfere with positioning, and even decrease blood flow.

At Mission Chiropractic & Wellness, our gentle Webster Technique can help:

  • Correct breech
  • Increase movement in the womb
  • Improve positioning for optimal labor
  • Improve oxygen and blood flow in the fetus

How The Webster Technique Works

The Webster Technique is the only safe chiropractic technique to use during pregnancy and utilizes soft tissue adjustments in the pelvic region. Unlike other chiropractic methods, the torso is never rotated to protect the health of the baby.

Instead, licensed chiropractors apply gentle maneuvering to realign the pelvis. These maneuvers include:

  • Manual adjustments
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Mobilization techniques

After the pelvis is corrected, it is usually advised to continue regular check-ups with your pregnancy chiropractor. Continued adjustments can be provided as needed to further reduce pregnancy symptoms. We will also provide a customized pregnancy wellness plan, including advice for maintaining proper pelvic alignment.
